Richard Morris Hunt was one of the most important architects in American history. His talent and vision brought respect to his profession in the mid-19th century and helped to create the impressive building styles of the Gilded Age. The man and his legacy will be celebrated in the exhibition “Richard Morris Hunt: In a New Light,” opening May 30 at Rosecliff.

This tour of Island Cemetery in Newport will reveal several connections to Hunt and his work, including the graves of people he designed buildings for in New York and Newport, monuments designed by Hunt, and the Hunt family lot where he, his wife and several of his descendants are buried.

The tour will conclude inside the Belmont Chapel that was enhanced by Hunt and was recently restored.

Our guides will be Trudy and Lew Keen, who are active in preserving, documenting and researching Newport’s historic cemeteries; Lew is also chairman of the Newport Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission. In 2021, the Keens developed a number of themed tours and presentations of Island Cemetery to promote its historic importance. They published the results of their research in 2023 in “Discover Newport’s Island Cemetery: Notable People and Monuments from the Gilded Age to Modern Times.” Their research into the people buried in Island Cemetery revealed that Richard Morris Hunt designed a number of the monuments for clients and friends.
