History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Drop-In Art Making is a program that allows people of all ages and abilities to get creative during their visit. Each Saturday during the summer, we will rotate to a different house and make a work of art or craft inspired by the house we are visiting or our current exhibition, “Richard Morris Hunt: In a New Light.” Come with your family, friends, or on your own.
Programs will take place outside or on house terraces. Check the schedule under “What you need to know” to see which house to find us at each Saturday.
